Acupuncture is the painless placement of very fine needles (most are thinner than a human hair!) into specific points on the body to promote healing and improve physical, biochemical (hormones and neurotransmitters), and organ functioning. The result is a change in regulation and metabolism in the body’s ecosystem. Better regulation leads to greater efficiency and energy production. In the first visit prepare to fill out a detailed intake form and to talk about the main concerns. This visit includes a consult as well as an acupuncture treatment. Needles will be retained for about 30 minutes in this first visit.
Acupuncture Initial Visit is required to schedule a follow-up session. In this session we will have already come up with a plan of care. Expect this acupuncture to last 45 min to 1 hour. This visit is 1:1 and primarily on a treatment table in a comfortable setting. Needles are retained for about 30-45 minutes while you drift off into a needle nap bliss!
Community Acupuncture coming this Fall! Community acupuncture is practiced in a group, rather than one-on-one, setting. Don’t worry! You won’t be baring much skin. The treatments are on the front of the body and mainly on distal points (legs, arms, hands, feet, ears, etc.). You will zone out and relax in a cozy yoga studio for thirty minutes or so with around five other people. When you fill out the form beforehand, I will get most of the information about your reasons for coming in.
Fire Cupping is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine where heat is added to a glass cup causing a vacuum effect when applied to the skin. The cups may be placed on the body and left in one spot for an amount of time or moved around on the skin in a gliding motion.
By creating this vacuum effect, the cups drain or pull toxins out of the body and allows the blood to flow, breaking up stagnation and congestion.
There are other forms of cupping as well, but this article focuses on fire cupping specifically.
Frequently Asked Questions
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, disease is caused by stagnation of blood and energy or “Qi” in the body.
Allowing the flow of energy along the meridians keeps your body in a state of homeostasis and balance. Your body can function at its peak performance when it’s cleansed of pain and toxins.
Cupping is also extremely effective in relieving tension in your muscles. In fact, it’s commonly noted that cupping has a similar effect to that of a deep tissue massage. The treatment is highly effective to help with range of motion in the back, neck, and shoulders.
Many athletes incorporate cupping into their wellness routine to keep their muscles loose and help with recovery from training.
No, there is no pain associated with fire cupping. In fact, it can actually put you in a peaceful, almost meditative state. After the treatment it’s normal to see rings of bruises on your skin, although it won’t feel bruised.
The marks will go away within a few days to a week, but the healing effects will remain for much longer than the marks.
Fire Cupping is a tried and true aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for thousands of years. As a natural way to increase blood flow, release tension and promote general wellness in your body, it’s a great technique to add to your holistic health and self-care routine.
